• Cancellations accepted by Thursday, September 5th will receive a refund less 15% fee, substitute attendee (with advance notice) will be accepted for a registrant who is not able to attend. 

About

This environmental conflict management short-course is taught by Dr. Lara Fowler, an attorney, mediator, and faculty member at Penn State.  She has mediated and/or facilitated challenging conflicts such as groundwater storage in the greater Los Angeles area; how to address flooding in a river basin in Washington State; and how to manage water supplies between agriculture, cities, and fish.  She recently completed a Fulbright focused on managing complex water dynamics in Sweden's Uppsala University's Peace and Conflict Research Department.  For more on Dr. Fowler, see Dr. Lara Fowler

What you can expect to learn?

• Analyze the complexities and dynamics of multi-party conflicts
• Understand how different parties — government agency staff, private sector leaders, advocacy groups, and citizens — engage in conflict, and how you can work more effectively with each
• Conduct situation assessments, both a “back-of-the-envelope” approach and an in- depth process to examine conflicts and design more effective resolution strategies
  Develop the capacity to design and implement effective and inclusive collaborative processes
• Develop and apply Interest Based Negotiation skills
• Improve facilitation and mediation skills through simulated public conflicts
• Respond creatively to parties’ strong emotions – anger, fear, frustration, hopelessness and communication breakdowns
• Develop new ways to implement inclusive processes
